Why do people need reading glasses?

As you get older, your eyes naturally start to change. This can happen in a variety of ways, but one of the most common changes is caused by the condition Presbyopia. At the age of 40, you may feel like you’re playing the trombone when reading a book or checking your phone, needing to move things further away from you when reading them. When you look at the text close up, you need to adjust the distance several times until the words come into focus.

This is one of the main symptoms of Presbyopia. Presbyopia occurs when the lens becomes more rigid and can no longer accommodate near vision. Your close-up vision naturally deteriorates, which means seemingly simple tasks start becoming quite difficult. If this sounds familiar to you, chances are you are living with this condition. Here are 5 signs that you might need reading glasses:

1. You’re over the age of 40
Everyone’s eyesight changes at a different rate, but Presbyopia is mostly developed by people in their 40’s.

2. You require brighter light when reading
It’s said that a 60-year-old requires three times as much light as a 20-year-old to do the same tasks. Notice yourself always switching the light on to do everything?

3. Your eyes feel tired when reading or working at a computer
Ever find yourself dozing off, or feeling your eyelids get heavy when you’re reading? One of the first signs you are developing Presbyopia is feeling like this, as your eyes are feeling strained and struggling to work harder.

4. Headaches!
The constant strain on your eyes caused by trying to focus on daily tasks can start to induce headaches. If your headaches persist even after taking a break from reading or screen time, you should visit your eye doctor for an eye exam.

5. You see halos
When your lens cannot focus light into your retina, your vision can start to appear blurry. You may see glowing circles around car headlights, light bulbs, or other screens. A pair of reading glasses could be the first step to solving this problem!

How do reading glasses work?

Reading glasses are primarily known as magnification glasses, meant to help correct vision that has deteriorated over time by magnifying your near vision so that it is easier to read and examine objects close to your face. As the eyeglasses magnify the information coming into your eyes, the internal lenses in your eyes find it easier to focus on nearby objects. This helps to reduce strain and discomfort when looking at text close-up.

The SmartBuy Readers range offers an array of styles of reading glasses for women and men, allowing you to find the perfect pair to match your look. Whether you’re looking to upgrade your current readers to a pair from our value collection; or cultivate a collection of fun fashion glasses, we have what you need. What prescription are reading glasses?

The vast majority of readers in our collection are “non-prescriptive” reading glasses and come with set strength levels. This means you don’t need a prescription to buy reading glasses, instead, non-prescription readers have a specific lens magnification, or “power”, ranging from +1.00 to +3.50. Ordering reading glasses for women or men is easy, just choose your desired prescription correct from the following options: +1.00, +1.50, +2.00, +2.50, +3.00, and +3.50. These numbers are called “diopters” and they act as a measurement of the magnification level in the lens.

You may have guessed it, but a lower number means less magnification, and as you increase, the magnification gets stronger. The lens power you need is dependant on your eyes specifically, but as a general rule, the older you are, the higher a number you’ll need! That’s just because eyes grow weaker as we age. If you are aged between 35-45, you should look to start with a +1.00 reader, those aged 45-50 will benefit from at least a +1.50 power, whilst over 60’s will need a power closer to +2.50. Remember, everyone is different! This is just a guide and in order to determine reading glasses strength, you’ll need to take your specific eye health into consideration.
